CHS leads the way with research ethics and high research performance

The College of Human Sciences (CHS) recently launched its new College Research Ethics Committee (CREC) virtually. Key speakers at the webinar included the College’s Executive Dean, Prof Kgomotso Masemola; Executive Director of the Unisa Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Department, Prof Les Labuschagne; Manager of Unisa’s Research Integrity, Directorate for Research Support, Dr Retha Visagie; former CREC Chair, Dr Elijah Elijah Ngoweni Dube; and the new CREC Chair, Dr Kgashane Johannes Malesa.

During the webinar, head of the CHS Graduate and Research Studies portfolio, Prof Azwihangwisi Mavhandu-Mudzusi, explained that many find it peculiar for the portfolio to inaugurate a CREC, given that a committee has existed for some time now. She said that the reason for the new CREC is due to the agreement by college management for the need to have only one ethics committee at college level, which deals with all ethics applications. "This new committee therefore marks the dissolvement of all existing committees and initiates a new revamped College Research Ethics Committee."

You can watch the words of support and encouragement in the videos below. One of the important points raised by Labuschagne is the importance of the CHS taking things to the next level, and leading the way in this regard. He says it vital for the college to take this initiative forward given the high research performance and sheer volume of research outputs that the CHS produces, which is the majority of research at Unisa.
