About the Unisa Convocation

The Unisa Convocation is a statutory body established in accordance with institutional statutes. Permanent academic staff members of the university, including as the Principal, Vice-Principals, Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Professors Emeriti, lecturers, retired academic staff, honorary graduates, and anybody who has graduated or will graduate from the university, is a member of Convocation and is eligible to attend the annual meeting of the Convocation.  

The role of Convocation

Convocation at Unisa is responsible for raising matters of concern that are relevant to the university's progress. The university's strategic orientation, policy formulations, and other development concerns are discussed in detail at an annual meeting.  

Convocation also assists the institution and the Unisa Foundation with fundraising and advises the Council or Management on issues of current interest. Additionally, it nominates candidates for honorary degrees and awards. Two people who have been nominated to serve on the Unisa Council represent the Convocation.

The President of Convocation is Mr Justice Dabampe.

Mr Dabampe brings a wealth of experience in public administration and governance to Convocation. He has served in various capacities within the Lekwa-Teemane Municipality in the North West Province. Currently, Mr Dabampe is a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in the North West Provincial Government. He is also affiliated with the South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM).

His extensive practical experience is complemented by a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Science and Public Administration from UNISA, as well as a Certificate in Leadership in Municipal Governance from Wits University. Together, his education and service record reflect a deep understanding of governance and public sector leadership.

How to raise matters with Convocation

Members may raise matters by submitting a written request to the Secretary or President at least two weeks prior to the meeting date.

Convocation Meetings

Convocation meeting are held annually. The next AGM will be held in 2026.

Executive Committee of Convocation

Convocation appoints an Executive Committee consisting of:

  1. the President 
  2. the Principal and Vice Chancellor 
  3. the Registrar 
  4. one or more members co-opted by the members of the executive committee of Convocation. The executive committee performs, between meetings of Convocation, such functions and duties as assigned to it by Convocation.
