College of Law Research and Innovation

The College promotes impactful research in law and criminal justice that informs policy development, supports legal reform, strengthens crime prevention strategies, and contributes to broader socio-economic transformation. Its research agenda is aligned with the Catalytic Niche Areas (CNAs) of UNISA and reflects the institution’s commitment to African scholarship that addresses both local and global challenges, including emerging fields such as digitalisation, cybersecurity, marine studies, aviation, gender-based violence and biotechnology. With its offerings and research, the College contributes towards the promotion of justice, advancement of the rule of law, ethical governance as well as socio-economic development. The College builds its impact through strong partnerships at local, continental, and international levels. These collaborations enhance postgraduate education and support research that is relevant, practical, and forward-looking.

In further advancing its research agenda, the College hosts an Annual Law Conference, which serves as a flagship event for the College. This conference brings together academics, researchers, legal experts, legal practitioners, policymakers, members of the judiciary, criminal justice experts, students and thought leaders from across the continent and beyond.  Furthermore, it serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, scholarship, professional development, and exploration of innovative solutions for continental and global issues. This reaffirms the College’s intention about its commitment to be a leader in producing quality graduates, producers of knowledge and thought leaders for both the African continent and the globe.

In its pursuit for knowledge generation and dissemination, the College proudly hosts six DHET-accredited journals: the Comparative and International Law Journal of Southern Africa (CILSA), South African Yearbook of International Law (SAYIL), Southern African Public Law (SAPL), the Journal of Law, Society and Development (JLSD), the South African Mercantile Law Journal (SA Merc LJ), and the Southern African Journal of Security (SAJS).
