University of Mumbai students visit Unisa

Unisa’s National Student Representative Council (NSRC) has warmly welcomed a high level delegation of students from the University of Mumbai in India. The visit is part of an International Student Exchange Programme that the two universities initiated more than three years ago.  The official welcoming  ceremony took place at Unisa on 2 May 2017.

The Unisa SRC warmly welcomed the delegation of students from the University of Mumbai. The visit is part of a student exchange programme that exists between the two institutions.

Zandile Sodladla, President of the NSRC, hailed the visit, describing it as a significant milestone that would help cement relations between the two institutions. She said the SRC was excited about the visit and it hoped to draw some lessons from the Mumbai students, especially on issues of student funding and the quality of their education system.

The two groups also used the opportunity to share notes on challenges facing students from both countries. The issue of access to higher education emerged as one thorny issue that is common between India and South Africa.  The two countries also form part of the group known as the BRICS Block.

Prof Annemarie Davis, Acting Executive Director of Research Administration, said the Student Exchange Programme gives students global exposure and helps to broaden their horizons. She said Unisa students visited the University of Mumbai last year and it is Mumbai‘s turn to be in South Africa.

Davis also added that the two countries share similar socio-economic challenges, and there is much that students can learn from each other and collaborate to find common solutions.

In their four-day visit, the University of Mumbai students will also participate in a tour to the Science Campus and to the School of Business Leadership in Midrand.
