Unisa has launched the Aerotropolis Project, an innovative and future-focused initiative that explores how aviation infrastructure can serve as a catalyst for economic development, research excellence and skills advancement.

Rooted in global best practice and aligned with Africa’s development priorities, the project signals Unisa’s commitment to shaping the future of aviation-led growth through teaching, research and industry collaboration.

The Aerotropolis Project is built around the concept of a modern urban development model in which land use, infrastructure and economic activity are strategically organised around an airport. This model integrates commercial, industrial, logistics and residential zones to support airport operations while stimulating regional economic growth and job creation.

The initiative aligns directly with Unisa’s Catalytic Niche Area on Aviation and Aeronautical Studies, drawing on key focus areas such as airport development, air transport economics, spatial planning and sustainable aviation practices. Through this alignment, the project strengthens Unisa’s role as a thought leader in aviation-driven development and policy formulation.

Looking ahead, Thabo Modibedi, project leader, explains that "the Aerotropolis Project aims to significantly contribute to the growth of South Africa’s aviation industry by informing sustainable airport development policies and advancing research in aerotropolis planning and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) integration. A major milestone on the horizon is the introduction of an Aerotropolis Short Learning Programme (SLP), to be offered in collaboration with Unisa colleges."

The programme will equip aspiring professionals, entrepreneurs and practitioners with specialised, industry-relevant skills, while also generating revenue for the university.

The project has already gained momentum through the successful hosting of the inaugural three-day Aerotropolis Symposium from 29 to 31 October 2025. The symposium, ably organised by the Unisa Gauteng Region, brought together academics, aviation industry experts, colleges, business leaders and non-governmental organisations, laying a strong foundation for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Beyond teaching and learning, the Aerotropolis Project is positioned to deliver impactful research outputs, attract academic expertise, and contribute to policy development at national and continental levels. It aligns with key African frameworks such as the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), reinforcing Unisa’s ambition to lead conversations that shape Africa’s aviation future.

As the project progresses, stakeholders can look forward to expanded academic offerings, collaborative research opportunities, and practical interventions that connect communities, entrepreneurs and policymakers to the growing aviation economy.
