The College of Education (CEDU) successfully hosted a segment during Unisa's Research and Innovation Week under the theme "Unisa’s Catalytic Niche Areas: Powering Change". The event, held on 29 May 2026, brought together academics, researchers and stakeholders to showcase innovation and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.
The proceedings, directed by Prof Hlamulo Mbhiza, reflected a structured and engaging programme aligned with Unisa’s strategic focus on research excellence and societal impact. The event captured key moments of knowledge exchange and highlighted the institution’s commitment to advancing Catalytic Niche Areas (CNAs).
The welcome address and contextual opening remarks were delivered by Prof Botshabeng Monyai, Head of Research and Graduate Studies, and Prof Mpine Makoe, Executive Dean of the College of Education. Monyai emphasised the importance of research-driven solutions, while Makoe spoke about national and global research and innovation challenges, and encouraged collaboration across disciplines to drive the required changes through Unisa’s CNAs.
A reflective poetry session by Prof Hlabathi Maapola-Thobejane set a creative tone for the programme, which then transitioned into academic presentations. Highlights included the Flagship CNA Showcase, which explored projects in energy, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and key social justice areas identified as drivers of transformation within the university and beyond.
The programme further provided practical guidance on research funding through a session led by Prof Hasina Ebrahim and Prof Moeketsi Letseka, focusing on the process from proposal development to securing grants. This was followed by the keynote address by Prof Seake Harry Rampa from the Tshwane University of Technology, who spoke on "Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Bridging the Gap". His address highlighted the need to cross disciplinary boundaries to generate innovative and impactful research outcomes in an evolving global landscape.
Additional presentations enriched the programme. Prof Mpho-Entle Modise outlined strategies and success stories in research funding. A panel discussion on postdoctoral research innovation featured Drs Gibson Makamure, Arine Kuyler and Emile Gouws. Their contributions emphasised the importance of nurturing emerging researchers and fostering innovation for future research and development.
The event further addressed sustainability through a thought-provoking session by Prof Sikhulile Msezane, who explored the role of education in advancing climate awareness and sustainable energy practices.
A major highlight of the programme was the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation, recognising individuals who have made meaningful contributions to research and innovation within the College of Education. The certificates were formally awarded by Monyai, underscoring the college’s appreciation of excellence and dedication in advancing its research and innovation agenda.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof Alice Ngozwana, who highlighted that the Research and Innovation Week provided a meaningful platform for engagement, collaboration and innovation. "May the connections established, and the knowledge shared and generated, continue to inspire future collaborations and innovative solutions within our institution and beyond," she said.
Overall, the CEDU Research and Innovation Programme demonstrated Unisa’s ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant research and innovation culture, building interdisciplinary partnerships, and positioning itself as a leader in knowledge production and societal transformation.
