In a workplace often defined by deadlines, deliverables and digital interactions, the "Fruitful Connection" initiative at Unisa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) is quietly reshaping what it means to truly belong. Rooted in the simple yet powerful act of "bringing and sharing" of fruit, this colleague-led platform creates intentional space for connection, care and reflection. It is a space built by colleagues, for colleagues, where the focus momentarily shifts from roles and responsibilities to people, presence and genuine human connection.

At its core, Fruitful Connection is more than a monthly gathering. It is a deliberate cultural intervention that invites colleagues to pause, check in with one another and nurture relationships that extend beyond office walls and virtual meetings. Each month, during a 15-minute tea break, colleagues gather to share fruit, conversation and encouragement. What may seem like a small act carries profound meaning. The sharing of fruit symbolises growth, nourishment and collective wellbeing, reminding us that when individuals are cared for, the institution thrives.

However, this week’s session resonated more deeply.

In an extended "special connect", colleagues not only shared fruit, but they also shared space for deeper reflection and personal growth through a guest engagement with Mapaseka Mokwele, who unpacked her book Intimate You.

Her presence elevated the session from connection to transformation. Through her reflections, Mokwele challenged colleagues to look inward and understand the importance of self-awareness, emotional honesty and intentional living. Intimate You explores the relationship one has with oneself as the foundation for all other relationships. Her insights created a powerful shift in the room. The space became more than a gathering – it became fertile ground for vulnerability, growth and inspiration.

The inclusion of reflection and prayer, drawing from 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Proverbs 16:3, further anchored the initiative in purpose. These moments offered guidance, healing and collective intention for the work of the SBL, fostering both professional alignment and spiritual grounding.

The atmosphere during the latest session was undeniably uplifting. The room was filled with positive energy, laughter, openness and a renewed sense of unity. The opportunity for a photo with and a book signing by Mokwele extended the experience beyond conversation, creating lasting memories and reinforcing the sense of community among colleagues.

Fruitful Connection sessions take place on the first Monday of every month during tea break. Brief in duration, but significant in impact, these moments are steadily rebuilding a culture of care, restoring unity and strengthening the social fabric of the SBL.
