On 23 April 2026, a partnership between the Unisa Cape Town Branch Library and the Oudtshoorn Municipality Library was officially launched at the CJ Langenhoven Library.  The event coincided with the international celebration of World Book Day.  It was attended by Unisa staff, Oudtshoorn municipality staff and Unisa students residing in Oudtshoorn.

The launch was formally opened by the Deputy Mayor, Veronica Michaels, after which the national anthem was performed to set a welcoming tone and create an inclusive local atmosphere.

The purpose of the launch was to celebrate the new partnership and to raise awareness among students and the broader community about the collaboration between the Unisa Cape Town Library and the Oudtshoorn Municipality.  This initiative seeks to reduce the sense of isolation often experienced by students in online learning environments while also attracting prospective students.

Presentations were made by key stakeholders from both institutions. The Oudtshoorn IDP Manager, Luvuyo Masola, outlined upcoming municipal developments and strategies. Motale Nkgoang, the Western Cape Regional Director, presented on the institution’s vision, mission and strategic direction, including the new regional model, Unisa Global, the Catalytic Niche Areas (CNAs), WC regional developments, the Student Walk and the institution’s evolution from a correspondence model to a CODeL approach. Dr Khomotso Marumo highlighted the hybrid tuition modality, Unisa Library Services and infrastructure, and the strategic role of the Unisa Library within the Oudtshoorn Library partnership. According to Mildred Stalmeester, the Oudtshoorn Librarian, the collaboration strengthens support for Oudtshoorn students by bridging the gaps in information resources.

Former and current students, Beauline Swartz and Cllr James Du Preez, shared their academic experiences at Unisa, emphasising how the institution allows them to pursue their studies while working. They also reflected on some of the challenges that come with being a Unisa student, noting the Unisa Invigilation App as one of the most effective tools available.

To conclude the event, Marumo, Nkgoang and Mlulukeni Yekani, the Oudtshoorn Municipal Manager, participated in a mock-signing of the contract.
