Unisa to launch inaugural Children's Literature Awards
Unisa's College of Human Sciences (CHS) is launching the inaugural Children's Literature Awards. The prestigious event aims to promote a sense of duty to the country's children, their families, and their educators. The initiative seeks to promote African languages and support authors of children's literature. This year's awards are aligned with Unisa's 150th celebration theme, "Reclaiming Africa's Intellectual Futures".
The Children's Literature Awards is a ground-breaking initiative that aims to recognise and honour outstanding children's literature written in African languages. It also celebrates authors who have contributed to the literary landscape of the African languages. The awards seek to create greater visibility for and appreciation of these valuable works. The goal is to inspire future writers by encouraging them to develop stories reflecting their experiences and cultures.
The awards will be open to books written in all official indigenous languages of South Africa (isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, siSwati, isiNdebele, Tshivenda and Xitsonga). Submissions were open from 1 June 2023 to 31 August 2023.
This initiative also addresses the objectives of UNESCO's International Decade of Indigenous Language by opening doors for promoting and developing indigenous languages.
