Unisa alumnus Gerald Mariemuthoo obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Police Science in 2020 and a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Police Science in 2023, both at the university. He currently works for the South African Reserve Bank in Pretoria as a Currency Integrity Investigator. In this interview, he shares details about his study journey at Unisa, which shaped both his personal and professional development and became the basis for how he now contributes to society.

Q: How did you find studying through Unisa?

A: Studying through Unisa was a rewarding and transformative experience that shaped both my personal and professional development. Unisa’s flexible and accessible learning environment enabled me to balance full-time employment with academic growth, while exposing me to diverse perspectives and critical thinking.

Q: How did distance education and e-learning influence your growth?

A: The experience strengthened my discipline, resilience, and leadership abilities and has equipped me with valuable analytical skills that continue to influence my work in investigations, financial crime prevention, and professional development. My academic journey at Unisa laid a strong foundation for lifelong learning and meaningful contribution to society.

Q: What does your current role as the Currency Integrity Investigator entail?

A: My role focuses on protecting the integrity of South Africa's currency system through investigations linked to financial crime, fraud and related activities.

Q: Beyond your academic qualifications, what professional achievements are you most proud of?

A: Beyond academia, I have continued to pursue excellence in leadership and professional development. I have obtained two internationally recognised designations: Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). I was recently selected as a winner in the following awards:

• Forty Under 40 South Africa 2025 - Winner in the Banking and Finance category
• Forty Under 40 Africa 2026 - Honorary Award winner for Financial Intelligence
• Forty Under 40 Global 2026 - Honorary Award winner for Fraud Intelligence
• Named among the Top 200 delegates of the Lincoln Mali Youth Leadership Summit 2025.
