Unisa and Gauteng Department of Education collaborate to inspire the youth

Unisa’s Department of Art and Music, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), has unveiled a breathtaking exhibition featuring artworks by Intermediate Phase learners from across Gauteng. This event not only spotlights the prodigious talents of these young artists but also marks the tenth anniversary of an innovative teacher training initiative.

Curator Dr Leana van der Merwe encapsulates the project's spirit by stating, “The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is it is to imagine what is possible … The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy.”

For this initiative, the GDE selected 60 dedicated educators, who receive comprehensive training in visual art and music techniques. The exhibition is a testament to the creative spirit of learners and the significant achievements of these educators. It is a partnership that bridges the gap between academic expertise and practical teaching experience in Gauteng schools.

From captivating drawings and paintings to intricate sculptures, ceramics and crafts, this exhibition explores themes aligned with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), making it an educational treasure trove.

Prof Thomas Pooley, Chair of the Department of Art and Music, extended a warm welcome to attendees, saying, "Please don't think of us as Unisa up on the hill. We are here and accessible to you. Our gallery is a space for learning and inspiration. On behalf of the Department of Art and Music at Unisa, thank you for joining us at this exciting event celebrating the diversity and excellence of the creative arts in Gauteng."

This partnership has evolved over a decade, culminating in a collaborative effort that promises to inspire and empower future artists and educators.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Creative Arts Provincial Exhibition, closing on 25 October 2023. It's a celebration of creativity, dedication and the enduring partnership between Unisa and the Gauteng Department of Education.
