Department of Science and Technology Education

Passion is what drives me

Mr Lawrence Masuvhe, Junior Lecturer in the Department of Science and Technology Education, speacialising in Science Education.

Mr. Lawrence Masuvhe is a young academic who grew up at Dzimauli village near

Thohoyandou in Limpopo province. He started his primary school education at Tshikosi Primary School and went on to Tshiwangamatembele Secondary school. He then went to study for a Bachelor of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of Venda and graduated in 2016. In 2017 he applied for a Bachelor of Honours degree specializing in Ethnobotany. Mr. Masuvhe then went to work as a volunteer at Tshiwangamatembele Secondary school where he taught Mathematics.

In 2019 Mr. Masuvhe decided to do his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). While doing his PGCE he was employed as a learning activator by the African school of excellence. In 2020 he volunteered as a Social Sciences for grades 4 and 5 up until he joined the University of South Africa (UNISA) in the Department of Science and Technology Education.

Volunteering did not compromise his studies because he had a working schedule. The working schedule helped with time management. Mr. Masuvhe mentioned that his passion for teaching is what made him constantly volunteer also that teaching is all about helping people. He, therefore, used his Mathematics and Science skills to help the learners at the schools he volunteered at.

Due to registering late at the University of Venda, the Bachelor of Education course was already full and instead of taking a gap year, he did a Bachelor of Science. This was after being advised that he can do any degree and do the methodology for the school subjects it caters to through PGCE. Mr. Masuvhe mentions that taking a gap year would have demotivated him to go back to school since some people work during that time. Mr. Masuvhe mentioned that he would love to hold a Ph.D., he is working towards that and currently doing his Master in Education specializing in Indigenous Knowledge Systems with the UNISA. He mentioned that his mother is his support structure and she encourages him to do well for himself.
