Nobuhle Nzuza, graduate, Postgraduate Diploma in Disability Studies
On 24 June 2025, the Unisa community beamed with pride as one of its own, Nobuhle Nzuza, a dedicated cleaner at the Unisa Johannesburg Campus, graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Disability Studies in the College of Education. The graduation ceremony took place at the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria, marking a life-changing milestone for this determined staff member who hails from the rural area of Nkandla in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Nzuza says that her academic journey was inspired by her background of growing up in a disadvantaged community. She adds that she was driven by a deep desire to uplift herself and others who faced similar socioeconomic and physical challenges. Nzuza remarks: "Coming from a disadvantaged home, I have also witnessed the struggles most community members face." She further notes that pursuing this qualification was her way of breaking barriers and creating opportunities for others from the same background, especially those with disabilities.
According to Nzuza, balancing work and studies came with challenges, including financial strain, fatigue and moments of self-doubt. However, Nzuza remarks that her unwavering determination to build a better future for herself and her family kept her motivated. "There were times that I thought I would not make it," she admits, "but I stayed focused on the goal to make a difference."
Affirming how valuable the qualification is to her, Nzuza explains that it is not just a personal victory, but a symbol of resilience. "It is a dream come true and a testament to what a person can accomplish through hard work and faith," she proclaims.
Nzuza further states that completing this qualification has transformed her personally and professionally. She elaborates that it has boosted her confidence, deepened her empathy, and enhanced her capacity to support individuals with disabilities at Unisa and in her broader community. She says, "I am now more effective in my role and better equipped to advocate for the inclusivity of people with disabilities."
Looking to the future, Nzuza says that she hopes to continue her journey with Unisa, this time, in a more academic or student-centred capacity. "My dream is to hold a position enabling me to mould and motivate future generations." She continues: "I want to show others that regardless of their backgrounds, they can succeed."
Nzuza’s story serves as a shining example of Unisa’s commitment to accessible education, inclusivity and the empowerment of its employees. She concludes that her achievement is not just a personal triumph, but a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge knows no boundaries.
