The Department of Chemistry is committed to the promotion of scientific knowledge through excellence in research, open, distance and e-learning teaching and learning in Chemistry by providing a congenial learning environment accessible to all students, without sexual, religious, nationality or racial bias.

In particular, the Department of Chemistry, aims to:
- Recruit, utilise, develop and retain high quality, motivated and enthusiastic staff.
- Develop and teach modules that are well-designed and enhance graduateness
- Revise assessment processes for greater balance between formative and summative assessment
- Develop, manage and implement measures to improve student throughput, success and attrition rates
- Develop an integrated student support model
- Monitor use of QA instruments and measures as well as ensuring the implementation of QA measures
- Advance ODL research in the department
- Advance fundamental and applied research programs which are internationally recognised, in collaboration with other organisations.
- Engage in relevant community service and programs.
