The Department of Auditing at the University of South Africa (Unisa) was established in 1962 as the only independent Auditing Department at any South African university. The Department is committed to providing its students with a quality learning experience through its highly skilled, experienced and innovative team of lecturers and administrative staff.
WHAT WE OFFER
The Department of Auditing is part of the School of Accountancy in the College of Accounting Sciences. The Department offers Auditing modules in the following undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications:
A. INTERNAL AUDITING
Undergraduate (Internal Audit)
- BCom in Internal Auditing (98303)
Minimum admission requirements
-
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and with at least 50% in Mathematics.
- A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption (or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board) and with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in English and Mathematics
- Diploma in Accounting / Accounting Sciences / Internal Auditing.
- Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing (98230 – AUI)
Minimum admission requirements

- An appropriate Diploma in Accounting Sciences or its equivalent, with modules on NQF level 6 in the fields of Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Internal Auditing and Taxation, or
- an appropriate bachelor's degree in Accounting Sciences or its equivalent, with modules on NQF level 6 in the fields of Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, or
- any bachelor's degree and a completed Advanced Certificate in Accounting Sciences or its equivalent.
Postgraduate (Internal Audit)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Auditing (98207)
Minimum admission requirements

- An appropriate NQF 7 qualification in the field of Accounting Sciences from an accredited provider of higher education, with majors in Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation and Internal Auditing.
- Applicants who do not meet this requirement are advised to apply for admission to the AUI stream of the Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences in an attempt to meet this requirement or to consider enrolling for another postgraduate programme offered by the College.
Accreditation
The University of South Africa offers a curriculum that successfully meets the rigorous requirements established by The Institute of Internal Auditors, and is recognised as a member of the Internal Auditing Education Partnership, Comprehensive Level for the period of 2023-2028.
All lecturers are qualified Certified Internal Auditors (CIA®).

B. EXTERNAL AUDITING
Undergraduate
- Bachelor of Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting (Revised Curriculum 2020) (98302 - FA1)
The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence that provide for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and valuable contributions to society in the fields of Accounting, Auditing, Management Accounting and Income Tax.
Minimum admission requirements

- NQF Level 4 qualification with subject-specific minimum requirements, as per Unisa’s website.
- Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences Certificate in The Theory of Accounting (Revised Curriculum 2020) (98230 - CT1)
- The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with intellectual enrichment in the field of accounting sciences; provide learners with an advanced understanding of current thinking, theory and methodology in the field of accounting sciences; give those learners with bachelor's degrees in Accounting Sciences, but not accredited by Professional Accounting Bodies, or those with Diplomas in Accounting Sciences, or equivalent, the opportunity to proceed to Postgraduate studies accredited by such Professional Bodies.
Minimum admission requirements

- Diplomas in Accounting Sciences or equivalent, or bachelor's degrees in Accounting Sciences obtained from institutions not accredited by Professional Accounting Bodies.
Postgraduate
No postgraduate qualifications in external auditing are offered within the department. Refer to the department of Financial Governance in the School of Applied Accountancy for the postgraduate qualifications in external auditing.
Accreditation
The Bachelor of Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting and the Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences qualifications are both accredited by the following professional bodies:

Career opportunities
The Bachelor of Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting and the Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences provides qualifiers with a base of further specialisation towards a professional career in accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting fields.
C. FORENSIC AUDITING
Postgraduate
- Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Auditing (98234)
Minimum admission requirements

- An appropriate NQF 7 qualification from an accredited provider of higher education with majors in Financial Accounting or Accounting and External or Internal Auditing,
or
- a South African LLB qualification (NQF 7) from an accredited provider of higher education (not BProc qualification)
or
- an appropriate Bachelor of Commerce degree, provided that a prospective student is also in possession of the Advanced Certificate: Fraud Examination (NQF 7) or the Occupational Certificate: Fraud Examiner (NQF8) (refer to http://www.unisa.ac.za/apply/cas/addinf/98234)
Applicants who do not meet these requirements are advised to apply for admission to either the CTA or the Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences/Internal Auditing in an attempt to meet this requirement or to consider enrolling for another postgraduate programme offered by the College.

- The qualification offers career opportunities in most large organisations and especially in the following areas:
- Audit companies, law firms, banks, insurance companies and most listed companies’ forensic services units, where you can become part of an investigation team to perform a variety of forensic services
- Law enforcement agencies such as the Special Investigation Unit, the Hawks, the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit of the South African Police, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Asset Forfeiture Unit
- Regulators such as the Financial Services Board and the Financial Intelligence Centre
- Academia
Specialised knowledge of financial accounting and auditing is combined with the skills required to prevent, detect, investigate, report and testify on commercial fraud.

After completion of Postgraduate Diploma, it is possible to further your studies by enrolling for a Master of Philosophy in Accounting Sciences (98587 – AUE) and thereafter for a Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting Sciences (90026 – AUE).
