Pay it forward
The Gauteng alumni chapter held its first meeting on 13 April 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre. In a move to resuscitate the chapter, alumni from Johannesburg gathered on this day to share in learning about the development of the university.
One of the important aspects that were presented by Ntombise Mangqase was individual giving, which she says has become more of a necessity than in any other years. “The university has issues of accessibility, hence the emergence of first-generation entrants who are straight from high school and the first in their families to go to university.”
As the university adopted fee-free education earlier this year, Mangqase says, “It is important to pay forward, donate to the university and create a legacy that will ensure that Unisa is sustained for years to come.”
Elena Swanepoel who is the Manager: College of Graduate Studies also highlighted the need for alumni to enter into postgraduate study opportunities available for alumni at the university. “Studies in essence keep you, our alumni, in touch with the university and create a long-lasting bond with your alma mater.”
“For us at Unisa, your presence means unity in education. It signifies the commitment you have in serving the mandatory role of the university as an academic citizen of South Africa and the continent,” said Busisiwe Mahlangu as she wrapped up the proceedings.
