The story of Unisa’s Makhosazane Mbuyisa is an epitome of inspiration for aspiring administrative professionals across diverse fields, as she was recognised as the first runner-up at the National Administrative Excellence Crystal Awards Ceremony. The Association for Office Professionals of South Africa (OPSA) hosts this award ceremony in June annually, to celebrate and recognise outstanding administrative professionals that deliver exceptional service and support in their workplaces.
Mbuyisa serves as a secretary to the Unisa KwaZulu Natal’s (KZN) Regional Director, Dr Joyce Myeza, and this award demonstrates excellence in her work. These awards bring together nominees from a wide range of industries across South Africa, including the private sector, government and higher education. Leading companies from sectors, such as engineering and telecommunications also participate in this prestigious event.
This achievement is a source of pride not only for the KZN Region, but for the university at large. It further highlights the dedication and significant contributions of administrative professionals in supporting the university’s operations.
As a semi-finalist, Mbuyisa participated in panel discussions at the conference, covering topics, such as leading and influencing without a title, the evolving skillset and the role of administrative professionals in building inclusivity and innovation, building strong relationships with management, and career growth and enhance.
Mbuyisa notes: "Being named as the first runner-up was truly humbling and motivating, as it is recognition of the hard work and passion that I demonstrate daily." She adds: "It inspires me to keep pushing for excellence and growth – not just for myself, but for the entire administrative profession."
Her path to this achievement began with nominations, where candidates were assessed based on their achievements, leadership and impact. Shortlisted candidates then underwent interviews and participated in panel discussions. The OPSA awards process is known for being rigorous and transparent.
Beyond her secretarial role, Mbuyisa serves as the chairperson of the Unisa Secretaries Committee of Practice, and she is an active member of both the KZN Research Committee and the Quality Committee. "These roles give me the opportunity to contribute directly to operational excellence and strategic initiatives within the institution," she says.
Mbuyisa further remarks: "I am sincerely grateful for the opportunities and recognition afforded to me by OPSA and Unisa." She continues: "This experience has strengthened my commitment to professional excellence, continuous development and meaningful contributions to the administrative profession." Mbuyisa also states that throughout her career, she has been passionate about finding ways to improve how things run administratively. "I look forward to continuing to advance both my career and the broader goals of the profession – fostering innovation, inclusivity and operational excellence in the workplace," she concludes.
