In preparation for the highly anticipated 16th BRICS Summit to be hosted in Kazan, Russia, from 22 to 24 October 2024, the Lomonosov Moscow State University announced the hosting of the BRICS Universities Rectors’ Forum, taking place on 17 and 18 October. The forum is a new initiative proposed by the Russian Union of Rectors. It is hoped that the forum will create an alliance of universities from the BRICS countries. Unisa is one of the South African universities invited to attend and participate at the first BRICS Universities Rectors' Forum.
Unisa is represented by Prof Solomon Magano, Acting Vice-Principal: Institutional Development, and Prof Boitumelo Senokoane, Acting Executive Director: Institutional Advancement, who are actively participating and presenting in different sessions and exploring future collaborations with various BRICS+ universities that are participating in the forum.
Participating in this historic event is crucial for Unisa as it presents an opportunity and platform for the university to showcase and elaborate on its future plans, particularly in its efforts to develop and strengthen capacity for research, teaching and learning, and engaged scholarship, and expand undergraduate and postgraduate offerings in the 10 catalytic niche areas that the university has identified. This will also cement Unisa’s position as a leader in the continent and underscores its commitment to expanding its footprint and collaborations with universities across the world, specifically those within the BRICS+ countries.
Unisa’s global footprint in BRICS+ is evident in the number of signed memoranda of understanding and research collaborations implemented with universities in these countries, including India, Brazil, China, Russia, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. The university also continues to actively participate and contribute to research, conversations and engagements covering several topics relating to BRICS and South-South collaborations taking place in South Africa, across the continent and the world.
The following main sessions have been identified for the forum and will be deliberated upon in the coming days:
