Unisa Library and Mogale City celebrate World Book and Copyright Day

On Thursday 24 April 2025, the Unisa Library, in collaboration with the Mogale City Municipality, commemorated World Book and Copyright Day at the Kagiso Library in Mogale City. The event formed part of Unisa’s ongoing commitment to promoting literacy and fostering lifelong learning in communities.

Guests were warmly welcomed with an inspiring performance by the Unisa Library Book Club. A group of young girls presented a thought-provoking drama that highlighted the value of embracing and taking pride in African languages as a way of preserving cultural heritage. Their confident use of indigenous languages throughout the performance was a true reflection of cultural pride and authenticity.

Book Talk by the Unisa Book Club

In his opening and welcoming remarks, Counsellor Nyakalo Segapelo of Mogale City encouraged the audience to "make reading fashionable". 

Victor Mbuqe, Manager: Library Services, Gauteng Region, indicated that an important goal of the event is to educate attendees about copyright, especially in an academic setting.

The keynote speaker, Dr Nthabiseng Raduvha, Assistant Manager: Library and Information Services at Mogale City Municipal Libraries, gave an inspiring message on the importance of collaborations. Raduvha and Philani Zulu, Senior Librarian at Unisa’s Gauteng Region, addressed the audience on the critical topics of copyright and information ethics. They focused on empowering students to avoid plagiarism, encouraging them to use information responsibly and to acknowledge authors and creators.

Sepedi poetry

Another highlight of the event was speakers from Unisa’s Department of African Languages. Speaking fluent Setswana, they addressed the importance of embracing African languages. Pemla Ditsele facilitated a workshop in Setswana with the message: "Kwala dibuka ka puo ya gago, gonne ke tsela ya go tsweletsa puo ya gago."  Otshepeng Moletsane responded with thought-provoking remarks.

Part of the audience

Ofentse Lebethe from the Department of Arts and Culture shared a message of support, emphasising that "today's event speaks directly to SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals". She indicated that these events show the power of collaborations in promoting literacy and lifelong learning.

As part of the celebration, the Unisa Library donated a selection of new books to the Kagiso Library, reaffirming its support for local libraries and its mission to bring knowledge closer to the people.

The celebration concluded with a poem in Sepedi.
