The Unisa Library is delighted to announce that following her nomination by the Preservation of and Access to Scientific and Technical Data Task Group (PASTD), the Executive Director, Dr Daisy Selematsela, has been elected to the Executive of the Committee on Data (CODATA) of the International Science Council (ISC) for the period 2018 to 2020.
CODATA was established in 1966 as an interdisciplinary committee of the International Council for Science. It seeks to improve the compilation, evaluation, storage and retrieval of data critical to science and technology.
This election recognises Selematsela’s leadership in the data community. Her expertise, experience and insights will contribute to the international data community and to CODATA’s strategic initiatives. Furthermore, her responsibilities will involve contributions to the Data Science Journal, the Data Policy Committee, the Data Integration Initiative, the Open Science Platforms Initiative, and the CODATA 2019 Conference to be held in Beijing, China, from 18 to 19 September 2019 with the theme "Towards next-generation data-driven science: Policies, practices, and platforms".
Selematsela is excited to represent Unisa and South Africa in advancing the CODATA mission and strategy.
She is a trailblazing thought leader, and Professor of Practice of Information and Knowledge Management at the University of Johannesburg. In addition to her international work, Selematsela plays an instrumental role in the field of knowledge management on the African continent.
Recently, she was invited as keynote speaker to the International Conference on Knowledge and Innovation Management (ICKIM) held at Babcock University in Nigeria from 14 to 18 January 2019 around the theme "Stimulating a culture of knowledge management and innovation for sustainable development". At the conference, Prof Iheanyichukwu Okoro, Senior Vice-President (Academics) at Babcock University, presented Selematsela with an award for excellence, in recognition of her role in knowledge management in Africa.
