The Student Success Coaching team
The Student Success Coaching (SSC) Programme, initiated by the Student Retention Unit (SRU) under the Department of Tuition Support and Facilitation of Learning (DTSFL), is transforming how Unisa supports its students.
Launched in 2025, the pilot focused on first‑year students most at risk of dropping out due to challenges in transitioning from contact to online distance learning, including financial pressures, limited access to technology, and feelings of isolation. SSC responded with a student‑centred approach, offering tailored support led by students’ needs.
Unisa graduates served as first-years' first point of contact, offering academic, emotional and social support. The choice of Unisa alumni was deliberate: students needed to be coached by peers who had already made the online learning journey. Alumni had faced similar challenges and had succeeded. This relatability served as motivation, showing first‑years that success in distance learning is doable.
Coaching is offered through one-on-one and group sessions, with each having a unique contribution to students’ success:

Pilot survey results confirmed SSC’s impact: 86% of students found Microsoft Teams easy for collaboration and communication, 91% were satisfied with the programme, and 95% said they would recommend it to peers. These results highlight accessibility and effectiveness.
Today, SSC has expanded its service to all first‑year students, extending booking times for those balancing work and study. Coaches submit weekly reports and meet up during Friday cafés to share highlights, overcome challenges, share coaching tips, and sustain their wellness. SSC continues to strengthen inclusion, adaptability and resilience, proving that with the right support, every student can thrive in a distance-learning environment.
