A memorandum of understanding between Unisa and the Instituto Superior de Contabilide e Auditoria de Moçambique will promote collaboration and academic exchange between the two institutions in the accounting and auditing disciplines.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on 30 January 2019, stipulates the development of collaboration between both parties in selected areas of research, particularly in the accounting and auditing disciplines. The parties also agreed to host a public lecture series and training, and sharing facilities and resources, within three years of the signing of this MoU.
Speaking at the signing event, Unisa’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya said that because of the shared histories of the people of the South, the agreement makes absolute sense. He also reflected on recent high-level corruption cases, both locally and internationally, to illustrate the crisis that the accounting and auditing professions are facing. "Accountants and auditors need to exercise the highest levels of vigilance in their professions more now than ever before to ensure that the organisations and companies which they offer professional services to, are held to the highest standards of accountability."
Makhanya said that the agreement should be rooted in common resolve to train students who will inject into their professions the highest levels of ethical conduct, while imparting the best technical skills. He mentioned that these professions are critical in contributing to the developmental agenda and welfare of our countries.
Concerning Unisa’s role, Makhanya said that the institution brings into this partnership many years of producing the best accounting and auditing students who have gone to become industry leaders and pioneers in the field. "We also boast the best research tradition and this place us in good stead to assist ISCAM in undertaking studies into a variety of areas that can assist both institutions to extract maximum value from their interventions in society," he concluded.
Prof Doutor Alfeu Jacinto Vilanculos, ISCAM Managing Director, expressed his gratitude to partner with Unisa, especially in matters of research.
The signing ceremony concluded with an exchange of gifts that were opened in front of the audience to demonstrate ethical leadership.
