Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

About us

In the 21st century, chemical engineering touches almost every aspect of our lives through, for example, the development of smaller and faster computer chips; innovations in recycling, the cleaning of water and the generation of energy; the design and improvement of processes; and the development of solutions to environmental problems. Chemical engineers use their knowledge of mathematical, scientific and engineering principles to solve technical problems safely and economically in the interest of sustainable development.

The Department of Chemical Engineering is located within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. The Department offers a comprehensive ECSA-accredited curriculum for undergraduate, honours and master’s courses in the field of chemical engineering. The Department transfers knowledge and skills to students through cutting-edge research, new technologies and service offerings for students worldwide, with a focus on a niche in the broader African countries   Emphasis is placed on marketable, real-life skills, creativity, leadership and a commitment to good global citizenship in order to produce professional chemical engineers and to create opportunities for life-long learning. The Department is currently working on one of its most exciting projects so far, namely, a project that focuses on fuel cells, microbial fuel cells, catalytic processes, bioenergy processes, process simulation, wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy technology.
