Non degree Purposes (NDP):

I did not complete psychology as a major for my undergraduate degree and I want to study further in this field?

The student must send their official academic records to obtain a permission letter from the department of Psychology then apply on-line for admission to Hons in Psychology, (even if the student know they do not qualify for direct admission).

The College of Graduate Studies (who administer the applications for admission and registrations for the Hons qualifications) will then decline the admission records to the relevant academic department.

Depending on the decision from the academic department, CGS will then change the admission qualification from Hons to NDP, 00035, and will inform the student on the module(s) to register.

I completed psychology up to second level?

The student must send their official academic records to obtain a permission letter from the department of Psychology to complete their third year level at Unisa.

I did psychology up to third level at UNISA but did not obtain the required average mark?

Take note that NPD programme for improving marks has been phase out (including honours to qualify for masters). The only cases where NDP will be used is for access to a qualification for students who have never done Psychology before. N.B. the decision was taken by the department of Higher Education, supported by our University Academic Planner of the College of Human Sciences and approved by the Unisa management Committee.

In addition, this decision was also taken due to that Psychology Honours programme is forever oversubscribed.

Students who do not qualify for the honours in Psychology are therefore advised to re-consider their second major or check with other institutions if they cannot repeat their third year modules in order to increase their average mark and make sure they register all the third year Psychology modules offered by that particular Institution.

I did Psychology up to third level but not with UNISA do I therefore qualify for NDP to repeat modules with the aim of increasing my average mark?

Yes, permission letter to repeat all third year modules can be granted. NB: should you not obtain the 60% on your first attempt NO second opportunity will be given to repeat third year modules.

N.B.: This is not a guarantee that students will be admitted into Honours in Psychology.  Admission into Honours in Psychology is subjected to enrolment management.

How long can I do the NDP at Unisa in the Psychology department?

The department of Psychology recommend that the NDP programme to be completed in TWO years.

Can I register for the NDP programme concurrently with a formal qualification?

Yes, however, you would need a permission letter from the Department of Psychology and other department where you are doing your formal qualification.
