Masculinity and Health Research Unit (Stream IV)

The Masculinity and Health Research Unit is a collaboration between Unisa and the South African Medical Research Council. This Unit is responsive to the overrepresentation of men in their exposure to or involvement in the causes of injury, across forms of intentional injury, such as violence, suicide and self-harm, as well as unintentional injury, such as traffic crashes, burns and drowning. In order to fully understand the ways that men’s gender norms and practices interact with health, more research is necessary about masculinity and men’s lives and their relationship to health. The EMU thus conducts evidence-based research through three research groups – men and masculinities, injury, and violence. The EMU’s research interests inform advocacy, community mobilisation and the public dissemination of science.

The key objectives of the Unit are to:

  • Conduct research that has positive outcomes for the overall biological, psychological and social health of men and boys, as well as girls, women and other genders.
  • Work on the material, social and psychological determinants, and protectors against different types of injury and violence.
  • Identify and develop initiatives for violence prevention, nonviolence, and injury.
  • Strengthen the provision of empirical resources for policy and government.
