Burns, Poisoning and Energy Justice (Stream III)

Energy poverty is a defining impediment to health, social and economic wellbeing, with the universal access to safe, affordable, sustainable and modern energy a global priority. In South Africa, these issues play out continuously in the sprawling urban informal settlements that are the site of glaring socio-economic inequalities, manifest through limited access to safe energy, inferior home structures, and limited healthcare. Recent research has indicated clean energy substitutes for paraffin based on global best practices, local experiences and recommendations from health authorities. Thus, Steam III seeks to provide local evidence to support the adoption, implementation and evaluation of safe and sustainable clean energy, especially for energy impoverished communities.

The key objectives of Stream III are to:

  • Study the determinants, contributory factors and consequences to burns, poisoning and health outcomes of fossil fuel and modern energy usage.
  • Conduct evaluations, analyses and critiques of the safety, usage and consequences of modern energy technologies.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a national inclusive safe energy campaign, the No Paraffin! Campaign.
