Unisa academic elected on CHE-HEQAC

Dr Lineo Rose Johnson, Unisa’s Department of ABET and Youth Development, College of Education.

Dr Lineo Rose Johnson from Unisa’s Department of Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) and Youth Development, School of Education Studies, has been elected for a second term to serve on the Council on Higher Education – Higher Educational Quality Assurance Committee (CHE–HEQAC) of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee (HEQAC) is constituted as a Committee of the Council on Higher Education (Council) in terms of Section 13 of the Higher Education Act, 2004. The HEQAC is mandated to perform the quality promotion and quality assurance functions of the CHE. Within the mandate of the CHE, HEQAC supports Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in their quest for continuous improvement through a process of external quality assurance. The process includes the development and assessment of standards that measure quality and constitute the core of quality assessment.

One of the critical achievements during her first 4-year tenure as member of the Committee was that Lesotho, for the first time, had formulated their Qualifications Framework (LQF). "My re-election into the Committee for another term marks a milestone, as a member of the HEQA Committee. I will be involved in ascertaining effectiveness and benefits to the society of Lesotho in this current term," said Johnson.

With opportunities and challenges brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), Lesotho’s Higher Education Institutions are responding to new and innovative ways of aligning their educational focus and standards. Some of the challenges relate to how they can pack Open Distance Learning (ODL) into their learning endeavours. Johnson’s experience in Unisa-ODL has been recognised and appreciated by the Lesotho-CHE. She shares her invaluable services with Lesotho, as part of the Protocol on Education and Training of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
