Every office needs a superhero

Annah Sibanyoni (DFRB) attended to 1 029 enquiries from 30 March to 22 May 2020, although only 25 of these were directly related to her department.

When the lockdown started, students in Unisa’s Department of Finance, Risk Management and Banking (DFRB) in the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) did not know who to turn to for assistance with numerous queries - until they found Annah Sibanyoni. From 30 March to 22 May 2020, she attended to 1 029 enquiries, although only 25 of these were directly related to her department. Despite several infrastructure challenges, Sibanyoni defied the odds by providing answers where they were least expected.

The queries ranged from NSFAS funding to registration, accounts, assignments, examinations and graduation. According to the grateful chair of the department, Prof Joseph Chisasa, the DFRB staff gave hope to the students who almost lost hope that they would find someone who would help them.

"We continue to experience unprecedented challenges that require us to be at our best with limited resources. This is what we ought to do for Unisa’s number one stakeholder - the student. This is what it means to be the university shaping futures in the service of humanity," he said.
