First-Year Experience Massive Open Online Course

Your journey as a Unisa student starts here!

The First-Year Experience (FYE) MOOC, affectionately referred to as First Steps, is designed to help you take your first steps into university life with confidence. As the starting point of the Unisa student journey, this course introduces you to the knowledge, skills, resources and support services that will help you navigate your studies successfully. Whether this is your first experience of higher education or a return to studying, First Steps will help you prepare for the opportunities and challenges of university learning while connecting you to the Unisa community from the very beginning.

The FYE MOOC is a compulsory course that will help you prepare for life as a Unisa student and take your first steps towards academic success.

Stay engaged, complete all the required activities and take your first steps towards a successful university journey with confidence.

Successful completion of the FYE MOOC is required before you can proceed with accepting your offer to study at Unisa.


To avoid delays in the offer acceptance process, please ensure that you follow these instructions carefully:


1. Create Your MOOC Account

  1. Go to: https://mooc.unisa.ac.za 
  2. Click on "Log in" (top right-hand side of the screen).
  3. Click on "Create new account".
  4. Complete all the required fields and click on "Create my new account".
    • Use your Unisa student number as your username when creating your account.
    • DO NOT use your email address, ID number, or any other username.

Important: Use a valid and accessible e-mail address, as you will need it to verify your MOOC account.

2. Verify Your FYE MOOC Account

  1. Check your e-mail inbox for the MOOC verification e-mail.
  2. Open the e-mail and click on the verification link to activate and verify your MOOC account.

You will not be able to access the course UNTIL your account has been verified.

3. Complete the FYE MOOC: First Steps 2027

  1. Log in to the MOOC platform using the following: 
    • Username: Your Unisa student number
    • Password: The password you created during account registration
  2. Under the Home tab, scroll down to Available Courses and select UOL-009: FYE101_2027
  3. Read the Overview page and begin the course.
  4. Complete all seven (7) study units.

    The self-assessment will ONLY become available once all seven study units have been completed.

    Successful completion of all seven study units and the self-assessment is compulsory. Failure to register and successfully complete the FYE MOOC will prevent you from proceeding with offer acceptance.

    4. Continue with offer acceptance

    1. Once you have successfully completed the FYE MOOC, wait approximately five minutes.
    2. Visit www.unisa.ac.za/acceptoffer  to accept your offer.

    Student checklist

    Before attempting to accept your offer, confirm the following:

    I used my Unisa student number as my username.
    I provided a valid e-mail address.
    I verified my MOOC account through the verification e-mail.
    I logged in using my student number and password.
    I completed all seven (7) study units./td>
    I completed the self-assessment.
    I waited five (5) minutes after completing the course.
    I proceeded to www.unisa.ac.za/acceptoffer
