Widening access to higher education

The exciting 2023 Unisa Shaping Futures Golf Challenge was organised in partnership with the Waterberg District Municipality to help raise funds for student fees.

The event was recently held at the Euphoria Golf Estate in Mookgophong in Limpopo. The challenge is one of the innovative ways in which Unisa is partnering with organisations in different sectors of the economy to increase access to higher education.

The Waterberg District Municipality is an important partner which helps to raise stakeholder awareness of the student funding plight. They have been working with Unisa since 2016 to help profile the work of public and private sectors and civil society making education accessible to people. 

"The challenge also informs stakeholders about the role and importance of partnerships and collaborations in the social and economic development of South Africa and the African continent at large," said Frankie Mojapelo, Director of Unisa Foundation and Alumni Relations.

Mojapelo and Councillor Morris Mataboge, Executive Mayor of the Waterberg District Municipality, agreed to strengthen the district's relations to advance and drive education. The challenge will continue to be held on an annual basis. 

Over R200 000 was raised through sponsorships of golf holes by companies that participated in the event. The following organisations sponsored the event: Pink Drive, Zebula, Isuzu, Aventura, The Ranch Hotel, Waterberg Minor Hotels, Sampada and Fusion Hotel, Polokwane.
