'Studying at Unisa is one of the best decisions I ever made'

Newly graduated Unisan, Sandile Kolomba

Sandile Kolomba first heard about Unisa, specifically that it is an institution of excellence, in 2012 when he moved from his Eastern Cape home town of Burgersdorp to Bloemfontein after being rejected by another university.

Today, he describes the decision to study at Unisa as one of the best he has ever made, as Unisa allowed him to study at his own pace and in his own space. In addition, not having physical lecturers prompted him to develop the self-discipline needed to work independently. "Being a Unisan has been rewarding, and I will live to tell the tale of this great institution that has shaped my ability for social interaction through writing and other discourses," he says.

At Unisa, Kolomba completed a Higher Certificate in Law (NQF Level 5) and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LLB, NQF Level 8). Kolomba’s journey was not without challenges. In 2014, his laptop, containing all his study materials, was stolen while searching for job opportunities in Bloemfontein. With no funds for transport, he walked more than two hours daily to the Unisa campus to complete his assignments.

With the support of his mother, who, despite health challenges, continued to encourage him, Sandile remained determined to achieve his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Financial difficulties almost prevented him from attending his graduation in June 2025. Still, with the help of Lynette van Niekerk from the Unisa Foundation and Shawn Inder, Director of the House of Graduates, a supplier of graduation regalia, Kolomba was able to graduate with dignity and fulfil a lifelong dream.

Kolomba praises both the Unisa Foundation and the House of Graduates for making the special day possible. He encourages others to persistently pursue their goals, quoting Eleanor Roosevelt: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

"Young people must take one step at a time towards their dreams," he concludes. "A studying society is a winning society, and achieving goals begins with planning and dedication."
