Shaping futures through golf

The Unisa Shaping Futures Golf Challenge headed to the Limpopo province, the home of Unisa’s North Eastern Regional Office, on Friday 2 August 2019. The challenge to fund higher education, in partnership with the Waterberg District Municipality, was held at the Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate, Modimolle, Mookgopong.

The challenges are held to raise funds for student bursaries at Unisa, particularly Student Access and Success, which is a priority funding area for the university. The challenges are intended to mobilise resources and widen access to higher education for the broader community.

According to the Acting Executive Mayor of the Waterberg District Municipality, Cllr Freddy Hlungwane, the golf challenges in partnership with Unisa have already started to bear fruit. "Two students from the Waterberg District Municipality will be fully funded to study through Unisa for junior degrees beginning in 2020. These funds are derived from the proceeds of golf challenges held in the region over the years."

Unisa Council Member, Mr Thabiso Ramasike; Mr Piet Chauke (overall winner); Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Hlungwane; Mr Anton Morudu (overall winner); and Prof Khehla Ndlovu, Vice-Principal: Strategy, Risk and Advisory Services.

The partnership with the Waterberg District Municipality will also be renewed to be effective for the next three years. "Thus, the municipality is set to top up the raised amount to pay for two more students," said Cllr Hlungwane.
