Purpose: This qualification is primarily vocational, or industry oriented, characterised by the knowledge emphasis, general principles in Optoelectronics electronics devices and application of Electrical Engineering technology transfer.The module provides students with a sound knowledge in a sub-field of Optoelectronics devices. Students will focus on the following discrete devices; Optical sources, such as Photo Sensors, photoconductors, Phototransistors, PhotoFET, PhotoSCR, Photoemissive Sensors, Thermal sensors, Displays, LCD and Optocouplers. This module will enable students to apply their knowledge and skills to the field of Optoelectronics and Electronics Design, Power Electronics and Optical Electronics Telecommunications. The specific purpose of Optoelectronics 1 is designed to build the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities and skills required in Optoelectronics and towards becoming a competent practicing Professional Engineering Technician. This module provides students: 1.With the knowledge on semiconductor materials theory, PN junctions, Diodes, Bipolar junction Transistors, Transistor biasing, Power amplifiers, Field Effect transistors and Thyristors. 2.With the educational base required for registration as a Candidate and/or a Professional Engineering Technician with ECSA (Refer to qualification rules). 3.Entry to programmes such as Advanced Diploma or Bachelor of Engineering technology Honours Degree programmes. 4.Entry to an Advanced Diploma upon successful completion of a work-integrated learning component, or a combination of work-integrated learning and coursework, equivalent to at least 30 credits but not to exceed 120 credits. Engineering students completing this qualification will demonstrate competence in all the Exit Level Outcomes contained in this module.
