Purpose: The purpose of this module is to assist students to understand the importance of globalisation in shaping social, economic, cultural and political changes in contemporary South African society and facilitate students' awareness of the principal dynamics in the historical evolution of South African society leading up to the political transition to democracy in 1994. The module also equips students to be able to explore a range of macro-economic policy frameworks adopted by the democratic government and their effects on the lives of ordinary South Africans since 1994 to the present and to become familiar with various social groups that are responding to the effects of globalisation on social change within civil society with selected case studies on gender, labour and educational struggles.
