Geotechnical Engineering - GEE2601

Diploma Year module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Pre-requisite: GSM1501
Purpose: The module is compulsory and core for the 280 Credit Diploma in Civil Engineering. The purpose is to make students aware of the importance of soil properties and their influence on geotechnical engineering. The student will gain valuable knowledge to distinguish between the different types of natural soils and identify and define the problems associated with different soils. The students will also be able to provide a number of engineering solutions to the problem soil encountered. Students will acquire knowledge and skills to solve well defined problems for the "the problem soil" encountered. Students will also be able to know about stresses in soils, consolidation in soils, shear strength in soils, lateral earth pressures, types of foundations and their applications, retaining walls and also be able to do any necessary calculations where they are required. Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to work well in a real life work environment.
