Purpose: The purpose of this module is to equip students with the relevant skills, competencies and knowledge to be able to contribute, participate and analyse relevant discourses, debates and issues around gender and development at global, national and local levels. Students who qualify in this module can determine and understand gender equality, poverty and gender dynamics; discuss the emergence of gender as a key issue in the development debate; and analyse the gendered division of labour and determine the role and potential of micro-finance services in poverty reduction, equality and women empowerment within a gender strategy. This module provides students with in-depth knowledge and skills on how to empower women and establish gender mainstreaming as an integral part of a holistic and integrated approach to gender and development studies.
