Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: In the absence of appropriate planning and management increased tourism can threaten the integrity of ecosystems and local cultures in sensitive natural areas - often resulting in environmental degradation and other negative impacts. The aim of this module is therefore to equip students with the required knowledge and skills to make an informed contribution to the development and management of ecotourism destinations or ventures in specifically the Global South, and focusing on the South African context. The themes addressed in this module include the exploration of the philosophical roots of ecotourism and its links with indigenous and African worldviews and epistemologies, the benefits of sustainable conservation, environmental interpretation, community engagement, sensitivity towards and an appreciation of biodiversity and local cultures, and the planning, managing and marketing of ecotourism destinations/ventures.
