Advanced Diploma Year module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: The purpose of this module is to advance the students' analytical skills in the solving stress and strain problems in solid structural systems. The qualifying student should be able to calculate for beams of arbitrary crossᆳ sections subjected to shear and bending forces and moments acting along inclined axis and planes; determine beam deflections under applied loads using moment-area method and the Castigliano's theorem; solve for statically indeterminate beams by using the differential equations of the deflection curve and method of superposition; solve for buckling of slender columns which support compressive loads in structures considering a number of simple support conditions; and predict when elastic failure will occur under any condition of applied stress in a simple tensile test.
