Purpose: The purpose of this module is for students to gain knowledge and skills to apply the theory and principles of punishment. The objective of the introduction is to familiarize students with the meaning of the concept of 'social control' and with the various elements of the concept of crime. The next step is to acquaint students with the various elements of the phenomena punishment. Students who complete this module will be able to draw a clear conceptual distinction between revenge and retribution as penal objectives the justification of revenge and retribution in punishment. The purpose of the inclusion of deterrence as penal objective is to give students insight into and knowledge of the development, justification, effectiveness and moral acceptance of this penal objective. Another objective of this module is to explain the justification of protection as a penal objective and to show how the community is protected though deterrence, rehabilitation, incapacitation and the various functions of punishment. The last function of the module is to put crime prevention in penological perspective.
