Purpose: This module is compulsory and core for the Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering. The theme of this module hinges on the fact that beside the technical and technological aspects, Civil Engineering works are required to be economically justifiable. The purpose of this module is to enable students to develop competencies and skills in making intelligent contribution towards the managerial and financial aspects of Civil Engineering businesses and entities. These include developing awareness and understanding of the need for financial planning, monitoring and the cost control process. In this module, the Engineering Economic principles, including interest rates, cash flow diagram and measures of worth methods are explained and utilised to analyse economic difference among engineering projects as well as selection of the preferred alternative. The aspects of financial management including financial statement, capital budget and risk analysis are also presented. Furthermore, students will develop skills to perform after tax calculations, determine the risk in the cash flow, account for inflation and carry out Break-even analysis to production processes involved in civil engineering projects.
