Purpose: This module equips students with skills and competencies to lay foundations for the study of language by introducing students to the general characteristics and functions of the English language. The module provides students with an overview of the basic levels of language analysis namely; phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics; develop students' knowledge of the four language skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing and the interrelationship between them; equip students with the conceptual knowledge that will help them to apply their language competence and skills in various real-life contexts and domains; enhance students' language proficiency and literacy development.
