Unisa to host Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair Founders Lecture

Approved for public release

Date: Wednesday, 16 November 2022

The First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Ms Monica Geingos, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair Founders Lecture to be hosted by the University of South Africa Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair.

The lecture will take place on Friday, 18 November 2022, at Unisa main campus in Muckleneuk, Pretoria under the following theme ““Women, Peace, and Security (WPS): Women’s role towards a global peace agenda”.

The Lecture drew inspiration from Chief Albert Luthuli who in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1961 asserted that “in our contribution to peace we are resolved to end such evils as (gender) oppression, white supremacy, and race discrimination, all of which are incompatible with world peace and security”.

The 2022 Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair Founders Lecture aims at dealing with the issue of women, peace and security and provide a platform for engagement and reflection on the need to put women at the centre of peace and security efforts.

“There is indeed a threat to peace as women’s lives continue to be deemed disposable, with gender-based violence threatening the stability of families and by extension, the society” said Prof Puleng Segalo, Head of the Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair at Unisa.

Following the keynote address by Mrs Monica Geingos, a group of renowned academics would respond/discuss to the main issues covered by Mrs Geingos. They include Prof Simphiwe Sesanti, of the Faculty of Education at the University of the Western Cape; Prof Relebohile Moletsane, the John Langalibalele Dube Chair in Rural Education in the School of Education and Pro Vice Chancellor: Social Cohesion at the University of KwaZulu-Natal; and Prof Fundiswa Kobo, of the Department of Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology at UNISA.

Other than being involved in activities aimed at addressing issues faced by the vulnerable people in Namibia, Mrs Geingos is also involved in a range of international bodies. She is the Chairperson of the Africa REACH Leadership Council, an initiative to create a new action agenda around ending AIDS in children and youth in Africa. She serves as a director in the Monrovia-based Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development; She is also a Leadership Council member of Concordia, a New-York based non-profit which builds global partnerships for social impact. Mrs. Geingos is committed to utilizing her institutional and strategic experience in the public and private sectors in Africa to influence institutional change and support women and young people on their leadership paths.
