On 10 June 2025, the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, formally announced that South Africa will hold an inclusive National Dialogue starting on 15 August 2025. The National Dialogue is aimed at fostering unity and finding solutions to South Africa's challenges.

Taking place on 15 and 16 August, the 1st National Convention will kick off the process and spirit of the 12-month National Dialogue. The convention will be attended by representatives of organisations cutting across 30 sectors of society to ensure the widest level of inclusivity in the process.

Unisa has been selected as the host venue, and will provide facilities at its Muckleneuk Campus in Tshwane and logistical support to the more than 1 500 delegates.

"In terms of national legislation, South African universities have engaged scholarship as part of their mandate alongside teaching, learning and research," says Prof Puleng LenkaBula, Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor. "As the oldest university in South Africa with a history/herstory spanning over 150 years, it is truly humbling that we can host such an historic/herstoric event 31 years after the birth of the new South Africa. It is also one of the many ways in which we continue to realise our vision of being the African university shaping futures in the service of humanity."
