Thought leadership is reinforced by education and knowledge

Honourable Commissar Marshall Dlamini

Born in the rural town of uMzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal, Honourable Commissar Marshall Dlamini affirms that education and knowledge enhance thought leadership. Dlamini, South African member of parliament and Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) Secretary General, says he is happy to join Unisa's #CircleOfExcellence after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations offered by the institution's College of Human Sciences.

According to Dlamini, international relations is an essential field of study as it broadens perspective about local, continental and global affairs. "This degree made me appreciate issues around politics, culture and economics as they relate to households," he says. He explains that through this field, countries exchange knowledge about what works and what does not, especially on governance issues. He adds: "It means that our politics should not be inward-looking, so this degree gave me an outward perspective to avoid falling into the pitfalls of past failures."

Additionally, he says that the degree provided further understanding of how countries around the globe relate to economics and security, for example. He remarks: "This understanding can only be achieved through education and knowledge."

Dlamini maintains that the EFF is an internationalist organisation interested in global politics, and as a secretary general, he is a custodian of the organisation's constitution. He remarks, "It is important to be aware of global affairs. Further, education can enable us to lead the society from an informed and purposeful perspective." He asserts that the EFF, as South Africa's third-largest political party, cannot be taken lightly, and society must not be taken for granted. He says: "Hence the importance of embracing education as we are also entrusted with the role to lead."

Unisa is a credible and reputable institution

Dlamini admits that juggling political, family and study responsibilities was difficult, but through commitment, he was determined to reach the finish line. "No one promised us that the journey would be easy, but putting your mind on the goal and being determined is critical," he reiterates.

However, he says that his academic journey at Unisa was incredible as he had effective communication, especially with academics. He elaborates that considering his hectic line of work and other responsibilities, Unisa, as an open and distance e-learning institution, enabled him to further his studies. Moreover, he was empowered to develop himself to assist others through learning.

Dlamini also holds various certificates from Unisa and is currently registered for a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Political Sciences at the institution. He assures: "I was empowered to study through this responsive, credible and reputable institution with a rich history." He adds: "Besides, Unisa has produced a lot of local and continental leaders."

In celebration of Unisa's 150th anniversary, Dlamini recommends the university reach out to 150 young people from impoverished communities with no access to education due to financial constraints. "Education is currently commercialised, so providing bursaries to deserving youth will help address unemployment, poverty, and alcohol and drug abuse," he argues.

Several EFF members accompanied Dlamini to his graduation ceremony at the Muckleneuk Campus, including the organisation's top six, Commander-in-Chief, Honourable Julius Malema and family.
