The Unisa Vice-Chancellor's Music Concert will be a night to remember this year. The prestigious black-tie event will take place at Unisa's Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria on Saturday 4 October 2025, at 18:00. It will be an invitation-only affair. The concert will be graced by the institution's Council members, its senior and extended management, members of the diplomatic corps, the music fraternity, distinguished patrons, donors, sponsors, business leaders and Unisa alumni.
The concert will feature award-winning South African musicians Phumeza Matshikiza and Simphiwe Dana, as well as eminent concert pianist Megan Geoffrey-Prins, accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by acclaimed conductor, Maestro Daniel Boico, former Music Director and Chief Conductor of the MÁV Budapest Symphony Orchestra.
The concert will showcase the institution's various music endeavours, including the Unisa Music Foundation's outreach programme, national and international competitions, music ensembles, and the Year of the Voice – in 2025/2026, Unisa hosts the 3rd National and 7th International Voice Competitions.
Prof Thomas Pooley, Acting Director of the Unisa Music Foundation, remarks: "In addition to great performances by iconic musicians, the Unisa Choir will join the celebration with songs from Unisa's choral heritage." He adds: "A special feature will be the first performance of Michael Moseu Moerane's symphonic tone poem ‘Fatše la Heso’, which he submitted for his Bachelor of Music degree at Unisa in 1941."
The concert also provides an opportunity for the university to network with stakeholders, particularly potential sponsors, donors, and the diplomatic community, thereby advancing the possibility of collaboration and sponsorship.
Additionally, it will mark and celebrate the end of Prof Puleng LenkaBula’s successful first term as Unisa’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor (VC), which commenced in January 2021. She is the first woman to serve as VC in the history of the university. Her second term will commence in January 2026.
