First Cohort of Bosadi Artisan Creative Media Business Start-up Programme
On 10 September 2025, the Inhlanyelo Hub launched the first cohort of the Bosadi Artisan Creative Media Business Start-up Programme held at the Unisa Sunnyside Campus' Enoch Sontonga Hall. This milestone follows a selection process held in early September, where 25 aspiring female creatives, who are also Unisa students, were chosen after completing an Ideation Workshop.
Prof Annemarie Davis, Project Leader of the University Capacity Development Programme, opened the ceremony by reflecting on traditions. "Traditions are built through the actions we repeat, and today in Enoch Sontonga Hall, we continue shaping our own," she said. "Enoch Sontonga’s hymn, Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, which became a national anthem, shows the power of such an effort. Similarly, opportunities for women can ripple outward – empowering families, communities and society at large."
The Chief Executive Officer of Inhlanyelo Hub, Prof Raphael Mpofu, emphasised the transformative role of the programme. He said: "This programme empowers participants to transform creativity into opportunity. It addresses the pressing challenges of youth unemployment and gender inequality while also unlocking women’s potential in the creative economy. I encourage every participant to be fully present and seize the opportunities provided."
The symbolic cake-cutting ceremony brought together Board Members and key stakeholders of Inhlanyelo Hub NPC.

In his remarks, Prof Thomas Mogale, Chairperson of the Inhlanyelo Hub Board, placed the initiative within the broader mission of the hub. He stated: "South Africa faces the challenge of youth and graduate unemployment. Inhlanyelo Hub, endorsed by the Unisa Council in 2021, is more than just an incubator – it is a catalyst for change." Mogale continued: "What sets us apart is our commitment to breaking down gender barriers and creating meaningful opportunities for women. Flagship programmes such as the Drone Divas, Bosadi Artisans, and the Bosadi Artisan Fashion Design Business Start-up, are proof of this dedication."
The programme overview was presented by Christina Rhodes, Operations Manager at Oakfields College. She shared the college’s background and that it is rooted in two women’s vision of building a creative space for students. She also encouraged participants to embrace opportunities in media and digital industries. "Globally, the creative industries are flourishing. Content is not just king – it is the whole kingdom," Rhodes continued. "Businesses, brands and governments need creative thinkers and storytellers who can capture attention. This course positions you to seize those opportunities in South Africa and beyond."
The highlight of the event was a moving address by guest speaker, Leroy Gopal, a creative that captivated the audience with his personal journey in the creative industries. "Most people have good dreams, but they do not accomplish them due to a lack of planning," he said. Gopal also spoke of the challenges he faced, including being told that he was "too dark for the screen," and how perseverance and passion kept him focused. His story served as a reminder that success is possible when fear is overcome and determination takes the lead.
