Unisa honours Methodist Church of Southern Africa’s first female bishop

The 100th Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), who is also the first woman to be elected to the role in the MCSA, Bishop Nomthandazo Purity Malinga was bestowed with an honorary doctorate by the University of South Africa (Unisa) during a graduation ceremony at its Muckleneuck campus in Pretoria on Thursday, 11 April 2024.

Unisa conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology (Honoris Causa) on Bishop Malinga in recognition of her sterling role as an imminent woman theologian as well as her contribution in changing the course of ecclesiastical leadership in Southern Africa.

Through her leadership, Bishop Malinga has contributed immensely to the transformation of society, especially in respect of gender equality and the recognition of young people. Through the various positions she has held within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and in society in general, she has challenged patriarchy and male domination and shattered its sting, often at great cost to herself.

Bishop Malinga’s ministry has always been firmly placed in favour of the poor. She used her preaching and teaching ministry to raise issues of injustice, corruption and inequality; and challenged all powers and principalities to ensure that the poor and marginalised should be at the centre of the Methodist Church’s ministry and mission.

The graduation ceremony took place on Thursday 11 April 2024 during the 18:00 graduation ceremony on the Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria.  To watch the proceedings on youTube, click here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50Xowpw_Zqw
