Unisa statement on the outcome of the court cases lodged by the EFFSC and the BLA Student Chapter against the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and the University

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has taken note of the Court Orders issued today (Thursday, 11 March 2021) by the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Pretoria; pertaining to the court cases brought against the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, the Honourable Dr Blade Nzimande and the university by the EFF Student Command (EFFSC) and the Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter.

The university will study the full judgments once it has received them and, following the necessary consultations with the relevant decision-making structures of the university as well as the Minister as the primary respondent; determine the best way forward on the matter.

The university wishes to emphasise that any decision on the way forward will be taken with the best interests of the students at heart. Such a decision will also seek to demonstrate our student-centredness as a university; as well as our commitment to the ideals encapsulated in the National Development Plan (NDP) and its aspirations to empower young people to improve their lives through education.
