The official opening of the academic year is a statutory annual event held for the purpose of, amongst others, rallying the university community behind a common objective, reflecting on past achievements and challenges as well as outlining the strategic direction of the university for a particular year.

This year’s ceremony, to be held under the theme “Reclaiming Africa’s Intellectual Futures into the next 150 years and beyond” will be attended and addressed by the Chancellor of Unisa, His Excellency Former President Thabo Mbeki, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Unisa, Professor Puleng LenkaBula as well as members of the Unisa Council led by the outgoing Chairperson of the Unisa Council, Mr Mashukudu James Maboa and the current Deputy Chair and Chairperson designate, Dr DD Mosia.

It also takes place in the year in which Unisa’s 150th Anniversary celebrations will be reaching a crescendo; and as we join the nation in celebrating 30 years of democracy.
