Message of congratulations from President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa

02 September 2021

Dear Professor LenkaBula,

MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATIONS

On behalf of the government and the people of South Africa, I wish to congratulate you on your investiture as Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Africa (UNISA).  We are confident that under your leadership UNISA will play an even greater role in our national life.

As we collectively strive to realise the UN Sustainable Development Goals and meet our own national aspirations, the role of academia will be as important as ever.

Universities have a key role to play in preparing our young people for the new world of work, and in producing graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to help resolve society’s most pressing challenges. As a proudly African university, UNISA must also be at the forefront of research, capacity building and innovation as we strive to meet the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

UNISA is our country’s oldest and largest institution of higher learning and it is therefore an act of great significance that the university, for the first time, is being led by a woman.

You continue in a long line of eminent women who were the torch-bearers of freedom. Your appointment will no doubt inspire countless South African women to follow in your footsteps, most especially young women in academia. Professor LenkaBula, you take with you our very best wishes as you take up this new and challenging responsibility.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa
President of the Republic of South Africa
